The Sunshine State

There are 412 cities, towns and villages in Florida. Pensacola and St. Augustine are Florida's oldest cities and many cities in Florida have a surprisingly small population. Florida is a state that offers the resident and visitor alike warm temperatures, sandy beaches, interesting sights, lots of entertainment and not to forget, wonderful sunsets.

Tourism with approximately 7 million visitors year is a huge part of the economy in Florida. The Space Industry represents $4.5 billion of the state's economy. The number employed at Kennedy Space Center alone is 15,000 and Florida ranks 4th among the states in overall aerospace employment with 23,000 jobs.

Florida agriculture leads the southeast in farm income keeping in mind that Florida provides about 75% of the oranges in the U.S. and accounts for about 40% of the world's orange juice supply. A steady stream of new residents and visitors makes for a strong construction industry. There is growth in high tech and financial operations as well as the development of many small entrepreneurial software companies and in the health technology fields.

“Sunshine State” was adopted as the State Nickname by the 1970 Legislature. Previously, official sanction for this nickname could be inferred from the law requiring use of Sunshine State on motor vehicle licenses.

The youngest cities in Florida are Cutler Bay in Miami-Dade County Grant-Valkaria in Brevard County Loxahatchee Groves in Palm Beach County.

Miami, which is often assumed to be Florida’s largest city, is actually much smaller than Jacksonville.
