The Gem State

Idaho is a land of rugged beauty and millions of acres of wilderness with landscape that ranges from sub alpine to desert. There are granite mountains, fertile farms, more than 2000 lakes, waterfalls, canyons and gorges. A study in geographic diversity, that is Idaho. Hell's Canyon, at 7900 feet, is the deepest canyon in North America and the Shoshone Falls, on the Snake River, are higher than Niagara Falls. Grangeville is located in north central Idaho and the community is considered the getaway to five wilderness areas and four national forests totaling 5 1/2 million acres.

Potatoes are one of the biggest exports from this state and Idaho potatoes are known around the globe. Two thirds of all the processed potatoes produced in the United States are grown in Idaho. Other natural recourses produced in Idaho include silver of which Idaho is first in production of in the county, phosphate, gold, zinc, copper and lead. Idaho has the greatest stand of white pine trees in the country.

Professional Sports Teams


Idaho has no professional sports teams but has a Rookie Baseball Team, the Chukars, that have gotten great praise for their quality of play.

That the name "Idaho", originally suggested for Colorado, was used for a steamship that traveled the Columbia River? With the discovery of gold on the Clearwater River in 1860, the diggings began to be called the Idaho mines. "Idaho" is a coined word, and is not a derivation of an Indian phrase, "E Dah Hoe (How)," supposedly meaning "gem of the mountains."

That Idaho produces 72 types of precious and semi-precious stones. Some of these stones can be found nowhere else in the world, which is why our great state is known as The Gem State.

That In Idaho law forbids a citizen to give another citizen a box of candy that weighs more than 50 pounds. Interesting!
