The name comes from "Green Mountain Boy", a name for an resident of Vermont going back to 1772, named after the militia of the previous year which was organized to protect the state against the New Yorkers. The name also comes from one coined in 1761 by Rev Dr. Peters who named the mountains "Verd Mont", meaning "green mountain", which itself probably came from the "Green Mountains" which were named by Samuel de Champlain in 1647.
